Long Beach CA Parrots - Partners in Rhyme!

Long Beach Parrots - Partners in Rhyme!

Long Beach ParrotsI finally caught'em!  You've heard me mention before how a gang flock of feral parrots locally known as the "Long Beach Parrots" have taken great pleasure in jarring me out of my sleep at 5-6am in the morning.  I'm convinced that the squawking immediately following my reaction are the parrots laughing at me in bird speak!

So I was at my desk yesterday and looked out of the window and there two were. Hekyll and Jekyll of the parrot kingdom.  They cautiously watched me as I slowly drew open my curtains for this photo op.

Polly Wants a Friend

I have to admit I couldn't stop watching them.  About 20 minutes later something interesting happened.  I noticed that social problems are the same everywhere.  A third parrot joined in on aLong Beach Parrot Photo 2 very low branch.  He was keeping an eye on the other two parrots who were keeping an eye on me.  I couldn't get a good photo of him.  He was very small and ruddy.  His coloring wasn't a vibrant green like the other parrots but a dirty green and he looked like he had lost quite a few fights because there were plugs missing from his feathers and his head.  Poor guy!  He's probably had to fight for every berry and seed!

He was chased off at one point and came back at least 3 times when the others weren't around.  I decided to look up social behavior of parrots and according to Trueparrot.homestead.com

"They are flock animals....Their social needs should be met by another bird...Parrots who do not get their intense social needs met often develop behavioral problems such as excessive screaming, feather destruction, and other problematic behaviors..."

Is this not the same in our society?  Those that are rejected are crying out for acceptance and sometimes participating in self destructive behaviors not only to themselves, but that which disrupts the peace and harmony of others around them?

Fascinating!

Interesting connection of the social habits of parrots to humans.  I've seen the parrots just once and thought it was really interesting that overall they seem to be doing pretty well.  I've always wondered how many are escapees and how many were actually born in the wilds of LA.

I wish they would like me during normal waking hours. :)  I'm going to try to get a photo of the "picked on" one.  Ya gotta see him.  Poor guy.
